RIOT is a free, open-source operating system for low-power Internet of Things devices. It is developed on GitHub by a community of companies, academics and hobbyists, and most of its software is licensed under the GNU LGPL version 2.1. Some proprietary drivers are included where no free alternative exists. Developers run RIOT on their own devices, so it is a building block rather than a hosted service.
The project does not name a company or foundation as its legal owner on its website. It is supported by Freie Universität Berlin, INRIA and Hamburg University of Applied Sciences, which founded it in 2013. Decisions are taken by rough consensus among maintainers, and anyone can contribute. For a European organisation, RIOT offers source code that can be inspected and self-hosted, but support depends on the community or on third-party service providers rather than on a single commercial supplier.
