Risk Companion: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Risk Companion is a cloud-based risk management platform for risk managers, compliance officers, auditors and controllers. Users build a risk register, quantify risks (expected monetary value and expected time impact), draw bowtie models of causes and consequences, and run Monte Carlo simulations. In interactive risk sessions, teams collect risks together in workshops; dashboards, PDF and Excel reports and e-mail alerts support follow-up. An AI function suggests risks and mitigations. The service is delivered as SaaS.

The operator is Risk Companion B.V., registered with the Dutch Chamber of Commerce; the site gives no address or parent company. According to the vendor, the application, databases, file storage and backups run inside the European Economic Area, without naming a cloud provider or data centre. The vendor acts as processor under signed data processing terms, with audit rights and prior authorisation for new sub-processors. One caveat: AI suggestion traffic currently reaches the model provider outside the EEA, a path the vendor says is being moved to EU-region inference. Organisations should therefore check the sub-processor register before using the AI features.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Risk Companion

Risk Companion is headquartered in the Netherlands and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Risk Companion hosts data in the EU and other countries. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Risk Companion is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Risk Companion together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
