Startpage is a search engine that passes users' queries on to search providers and returns the results without revealing the user's identity. Its results come from Google and, according to Wikipedia, also Bing. Startpage says it does not store personal information or search data and removes trackers. It offers an Anonymous View mode that opens result pages through a proxy, and it earns revenue from contextual ads tied to search keywords rather than user history.
Startpage is headquartered in The Hague, Netherlands, and operated by the Dutch company Surfboard Holding BV. Since 2019 a majority stake has been held through Privacy One Group, which belongs to System1, a publicly traded US advertising company. The ultimate parent is therefore American, which is a CLOUD Act consideration, even though Startpage says its founders can block technical changes that would harm user privacy. The company states that users can choose to use only European servers.
