TransIP: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

TransIP is a Dutch provider of domains, web hosting, email hosting and cloud infrastructure for individuals, businesses and developers. It offers standard and managed WordPress and WooCommerce hosting, a drag-and-drop site builder, SSL certificates and backup, and, for larger workloads, virtual private servers, Kubernetes, an OpenStack-based cloud and object storage. All services are delivered as managed online services operated by the provider.

TransIP has operated in the Netherlands since 2003 and is part of team.blue, a European group headquartered in Ghent, Belgium, formed in 2019 through a merger that included TransIP and Combell. Team.blue has been backed by the investment firm Hg since 2019, with CPP Investments and Sofina investing in 2024. TransIP states that it stores customer data in the Netherlands. The services are proprietary and cannot be self-hosted. Hosting and group headquarters are in Europe; the group's investor structure is worth weighing in a sovereignty assessment.

Why digital sovereignty matters with TransIP

TransIP is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in GB. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so TransIP scores best on data residency.

TransIP is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs TransIP together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
