Acronis: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Acronis supplies cyber protection software that combines backup, disaster recovery, protection against malware and ransomware, and endpoint management in one platform. Acronis Cyber Protect is aimed at businesses, from small organisations to large enterprises, and Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud at service providers. Backups can be written to Acronis Cloud, local or network storage, or S3-compatible public cloud storage. Management can be done from the cloud, fully on-premises or in a hybrid setup, including for air-gapped environments.

Acronis is headquartered in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, and was founded in Singapore in 2003. According to Wikipedia, the Swedish investment firm EQT acquired a majority stake in 2025. Switzerland is not an EU member state but is an EFTA country. In 2016 Acronis announced storage locations in Zurich, Frankfurt and Strasbourg, alongside London; the current list is on Acronis's website. With fully local storage, backup data stays within your own environment; with Acronis Cloud, the chosen data centre determines where it is stored.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Acronis

Acronis is headquartered in Switzerland and falls under Swiss law, including the revised Swiss data protection act. Switzerland is not an EU member, but the European Commission recognises its level of data protection as adequate. Its Swiss headquarters does not by itself bring it under US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. The ultimate owner is based in SE, also within Europe.

Acronis hosts data in EU, CH, US, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Acronis is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Acronis together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
