Akamai Workforce Protector (LayerX): sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Akamai Workforce Protector, known as LayerX until 2026, is a security layer that runs as an extension in the browsers employees already use, such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Safari. The extension monitors how users and AI agents interact with web content, prompts, file uploads and SaaS applications, and can warn, redact or block based on policy. Management and reporting run through a central console, with integrations for identity providers, SIEM and MDM among others. According to the vendor, no dedicated browser or network proxy is needed.

LayerX is a company from Tel Aviv, Israel, and was acquired in July 2026 by the US company Akamai Technologies, which now sells the technology under its own brand. The parent company is therefore in the United States, so US legislation such as the CLOUD Act may apply. The product page does not say where processed data is stored. European organisations should clarify this with Akamai in advance, together with the data processing agreement and how prompts are handled.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Akamai Workforce Protector (LayerX)

Akamai Workforce Protector (LayerX) is headquartered in IL, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Akamai Workforce Protector (LayerX) hosts data outside the EU (OTHER, US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Akamai Workforce Protector (LayerX) is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Akamai Workforce Protector (LayerX) together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
