Akkoma is free software for federated social networks and a fork of Pleroma. It uses the ActivityPub protocol and therefore interoperates with Mastodon and other fediverse software. Akkoma has its own frontend (akkoma-fe) and can also be used with the Mastodon web interface. Features include custom emoji reactions and Misskey-Flavoured Markdown. Users can join an existing instance or run their own; the documentation includes installation guides for Docker, Debian, Fedora, Alpine, Arch and FreeBSD, among others.
Akkoma is a community project licensed under the AGPLv3, with no central operator and no fixed hosting location. The instance administrator decides where data is stored: an organisation that self-hosts in the EU keeps full control over storage and jurisdiction and does not depend on an outside vendor. With a third-party instance, location and policies depend on that operator. Content shared through federation with other instances falls outside this control.
