Hubzilla is a self-hosted platform for building interconnected websites and communities. It combines social networking, federated discussion groups and forums, cloud file storage, blogs, web pages and wikis, with fine-grained permissions for private posts, files and groups. A distinctive feature is nomadic identity: users can move their identity to another server or keep clones as backups. It connects to the wider fediverse through ActivityPub and Diaspora protocols and offers federated single sign-on. Administrators run it on common web server technology.
Hubzilla is free software under the MIT licence, with its code on Framagit. The project is supported by the Hubzilla Association, whose registered office is in Switzerland and whose statutes are governed by Swiss civil law. There is no central operator: each server's administrator decides where data sits, so an organisation can host it in an EU data centre under its own control. Content shared with other servers is stored there under those operators' policies. Self-hosting means taking care of updates, security and backups.
