Alibre Design is a 3D parametric CAD package for mechanical design, aimed at smaller engineering businesses and hobbyists. It covers part modelling from sketches, sheet metal, weldments, assemblies, 2D drawings, bills of materials, rendering, Python scripting and import and export of common CAD formats; Alibre PDM supports local deployment. It is installed as desktop software and runs on Microsoft Windows only. It is sold with perpetual licences and optional yearly maintenance rather than as a subscription; node-locked and concurrent licences need an internet connection for activation.
Alibre, LLC is based in Texas in the United States. After 3D Systems owned the software from 2011, former Alibre staff led by Max Freeman reacquired it in 2017, returning it to private ownership; no separate foreign parent is apparent. Because models and drawings are normally stored locally, a European organisation keeps control over where design data resides, and only licence activation involves a connection to the vendor. The product is proprietary.
