Blender: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Blender is a free and open-source 3D creation suite covering a complete 3D pipeline for artists and small teams. It includes the Cycles and EEVEE render engines and Grease Pencil for 2D animation, and is used for animated films and visual effects. You may use it for any purpose, including commercially or in education. Blender runs as a desktop application on Windows, macOS and Linux and is distributed as a download, so using it does not involve a vendor-hosted service.

The Blender Foundation is an independent public-benefit organisation, a Dutch stichting based in Amsterdam, founded in 2002. It manages the public projects on blender.org and is funded mainly by the Development Fund and donations. The source code is maintained under the GNU General Public License, and no foreign parent company is apparent. For a European organisation this means no licence cost, no dependence on a cloud provider and full control over where project files are stored, since they stay on your own systems.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Blender

Blender is headquartered in NL and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Blender scores best on data residency.

Blender is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Blender together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
