Amazon Connect: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Amazon Connect is a cloud contact centre from Amazon Web Services. It supports voice, chat, email, SMS, WhatsApp and Apple Messages, and combines these channels with AI agents that handle requests end to end, a no-code visual designer, and assistance for human agents during conversations. AWS now calls the service Amazon Connect Customer. It runs only as a managed cloud service on AWS and is billed per interaction.

Amazon Connect belongs to Amazon.com, Inc., headquartered in the United States, so US jurisdiction and the CLOUD Act apply. Customers choose an AWS Region, and according to AWS their data stays in that Region. Available Regions include Frankfurt and London, alongside US, Canadian, African and Asia-Pacific Regions. AWS lists support for the GDPR. There is no self-hosted option and the service is proprietary. A European organisation that wants to keep conversation and customer data in Europe can select a European Region, but remains dependent on a US provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Amazon Connect

Amazon Connect is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Amazon Connect hosts data in US, EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Amazon Connect is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Amazon Connect together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
