Amazon Location Service is a managed AWS service for adding location functionality to applications. It offers maps, places (search and geocoding), routes, trackers and geofences, and integrates with other AWS services such as IAM, CloudTrail and CloudWatch. Developers use APIs and SDKs; the service runs as SaaS within an AWS account. According to AWS, sensitive tracking and geofence data stays within the customer's own AWS account and queries sent to data providers are anonymised.
AWS is part of Amazon, headquartered in the United States, and is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Amazon Location is available in several AWS Regions, including Frankfurt, Ireland, London, Spain and Stockholm, and customers choose the region in which their data is stored. The AWS Data Processing Addendum contains AWS's GDPR obligations as a processor and applies the standard contractual clauses for transfers outside the EEA. An EU region does not change the provider's US jurisdiction; European organisations wishing to avoid that can self-host open-source mapping and geocoding stacks or choose a European provider.
