Amazon Simple Notification Service (Amazon SNS) is a fully managed publish-subscribe messaging service from Amazon Web Services. Developers use it for application-to-person messages, including SMS texts to recipients in many countries, for mobile push and email notifications, and for application-to-application messages. Messages can be filtered, batched and retried, and events from other AWS services can be routed to SNS. The service is delivered only as a cloud service within the AWS platform, and messages can be encrypted with AWS KMS.
Amazon Web Services is operated by Amazon.com, Inc., which is headquartered in Seattle. As a US company, it is subject to US jurisdiction regardless of where data is stored. AWS states that customers determine the geographic region where their customer data is stored, and it offers AWS Regions in Europe, so a European deployment can keep data in the EU. AWS publishes a GDPR commitment and a Data Processing Addendum that includes Standard Contractual Clauses. The service is proprietary and cannot be self-hosted, so region, encryption and key management need deliberate settings.
