Apertus is a family of open large language models developed by the Swiss AI Initiative, a collaboration of ETH Zurich, EPFL and CSCS. The current version, Apertus 1.5, was released in July 2026. The project publishes weights, training data, code and documentation, so the models can be downloaded and used in own applications. It is positioned as a foundation model for sovereign AI, as an alternative to closed models from commercial providers.
According to their Hugging Face model cards, the models are licensed under Apache 2.0, which allows the weights to run on an organisation's own infrastructure. The development partners are Swiss universities and a research centre, and the site's copyright line names the ETH AI Center and the EPFL AI Center. The project is run by academic institutions, not a commercial owner. Swisscom is named as a strategic partner of the initiative. Switzerland is outside the EU, so for sovereignty purposes what matters most is where the models are run.
