The ARD Mediathek is the shared online video platform of the ARD, the association of Germany's regional public-service broadcasters. It offers programmes from Das Erste and the regional third programmes such as BR, NDR, WDR and SWR, plus channels such as ARD alpha, tagesschau24, phoenix and ONE, many of which can be watched live. The range covers news, politics, sport, culture, films, series, science and children's programmes. The platform has been online since May 2008, is free to use without registration and is offered through the website ardmediathek.de; a user account is optional and lets viewers save videos and keep a viewing history.
The ARD Mediathek is run by the online editorial team ARD.de in Mainz and is financed through the German broadcasting contribution, not through advertising or subscriptions. It has no private or foreign parent company; the service belongs to the German public broadcaster. The platform is not open source. The sources used do not state which hosting providers are used; that information belongs in the service's own privacy statement.
