ARTE is a European public-service cultural channel run jointly by France and Germany, and arte.tv is its streaming service. It offers films, documentaries, series, music and theatre performances, magazine shows, reportage, news and web formats, organised by theme or genre. Most programmes remain available for catch-up viewing after broadcast. The service runs in the browser and as apps for smartphones and smart TVs, with French and German audio and, for selected programmes, subtitles in languages including English. Related services include ARTE Concert for live stage performances and a podcast site.
ARTE consists of the Strasbourg-based European Economic Interest Grouping ARTE GEIE, ARTE France in Paris and ARTE Deutschland in Baden-Baden. ARTE France is owned by France Télévisions, the French state, Radio France and INA; ARTE Deutschland is a subsidiary of ARD and ZDF. There is therefore no private or foreign parent company. The service is not open source. The sources used do not state where the streaming is hosted; that belongs in ARTE's own privacy statement.
