Autodesk Civil 3D is software for designing, analysing and documenting civil infrastructure. Engineers use it for terrain and surface modelling, corridor design for roads and rail, drainage pipe networks and construction documentation. It is a discipline-specific program in the AutoCAD family, works with DWG drawings and, according to Autodesk, runs on Windows. It is proprietary desktop software licensed by subscription or through consumption-based Flex tokens; after installation it can run offline, with periodic verification of the subscription.
Autodesk is a publicly listed company headquartered in San Francisco, California, and is therefore subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Project files are created in the desktop application, while the collaboration service Collaboration for Civil 3D is operated by Autodesk. For that service, primary storage can be set to the US, the EU, Australia, the United Kingdom, Germany, Canada, India or Japan. A European organisation can therefore choose where shared project data is held, but still depends on a US supplier for licensing and cloud collaboration.
