AVEVA: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

AVEVA is a British software group headquartered in Cambridge that develops software for industrial engineering, design and operations. The design product AVEVA E3D Design is aimed at process plants, shipbuilding and power projects and lets several disciplines work in one 3D model without clashes between them. The open cloud platform AVEVA CONNECT brings business information together. The offering targets the process industry, marine engineering and the energy sector.

Since January 2023, AVEVA has been wholly owned by France's Schneider Electric, following a scheme of arrangement under which Schneider acquired the remaining shares; the London listing was cancelled the following day. E3D Design can be deployed on premise or in the cloud. The public privacy notice does not name hosting locations for the cloud services, so a European organisation would need to ask AVEVA for that location contractually. AVEVA publishes a Data Processing Addendum for customers.

Why digital sovereignty matters with AVEVA

AVEVA is headquartered in GB, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in FR, also within Europe.

AVEVA hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

AVEVA is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs AVEVA together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
