AWS Cost Explorer is Amazon Web Services' native tool for analysing the costs and usage of an AWS environment. Users view cost trends in graphs and reports, filter and group data, compare periods and forecast future spending. Preconfigured views are provided, and with Amazon Q Developer users can ask questions about costs in plain language. An API allows programmatic access to the data. It is part of the AWS billing console; there is no self-hosted edition.
AWS is a subsidiary of Amazon, headquartered in Seattle in the United States, and is therefore subject to US legislation such as the CLOUD Act. AWS does not state where the cost data is stored. The data is billing and usage information for the customer's own account, which indirectly reveals business information. For the GDPR, AWS refers generally to its Data Processing Addendum and standard contractual clauses; AWS publishes no Cost Explorer-specific commitment.
