BalanceNG: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

BalanceNG is a software load balancer for Linux from Inlab Networks GmbH. It uses its own IPv4/IPv6 stack, a multithreaded architecture, active/passive clustering based on VRRP and the bngsync session-table synchronisation protocol. It also includes an in-memory location database for IPv4 and IPv6. It is aimed at network operators, satellite operators, hosting companies and telecom product designers. The software is installed by the customer on Linux; knowledge-base articles cover virtualised environments such as VMware and KVM. A related, separate tool called Balance is open source; BalanceNG itself is supplied with licence keys.

Inlab Networks GmbH is a German company and states that BalanceNG carries the TeleTrusT 'IT Security made in Germany' quality mark. Because the product runs as software on the customer's own systems, traffic and configuration stay under the customer's control and no data processing at the vendor is required. The website names no owner and no foreign parent company.

Why digital sovereignty matters with BalanceNG

BalanceNG is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

BalanceNG runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

BalanceNG is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs BalanceNG together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
