BIRD (Bird Internet Routing Daemon) is an open-source daemon for dynamic IP routing on Unix-like systems, mainly Linux and BSD variants. Network operators use it to run routing protocols on their own routers and servers. It began as a university project and is now developed and maintained by CZ.NIC. The software is distributed as source code and as packages that the operator installs and runs on its own infrastructure.

The project is developed by CZ.NIC, a Czech association of legal persons headquartered in Prague, founded in 1998 by internet service providers, which also operates the .cz domain registry. The maintainer is therefore an EU organisation with no foreign parent company. The source code is published under the GNU General Public License, so organisations can inspect and modify it and run the software on their own equipment. For European organisations, BIRD is a sovereign routing option because the software runs without a vendor cloud.
