Cattr: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cattr is a self-hosted time tracking and project management platform. The server provides time tracking across projects and tasks, task management with comments and attachments, screenshots and activity tracking, dashboards and reports, user and role management, offline synchronisation and a public API. An Electron-based desktop application records the time, and integrations exist for GitLab and Redmine, among others. Container images are published on GitHub's container registry, and the project ships a Dockerfile and a docker-compose file.

Cattr is designed to run on your own infrastructure. The organisation that installs it therefore decides where the data is stored and who can access it; the repository describes no vendor-hosted service. The server source code is published on GitHub under the Server Side Public License 1.0, while the UI kit and some SDKs are under the MIT licence. The repository names no company or headquarters. For a European organisation, self-hosting inside the EU avoids passing data to a third party, but installation, updates and security then become its own responsibility.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cattr

Cattr is headquartered in UA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

Cattr hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

Cattr is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cattr together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
