DIALux: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

DIALux is lighting design software from DIAL GmbH in Lüdenscheid, Germany. Lighting designers use it to plan, calculate and visualise indoor, outdoor, street and emergency lighting, and to place luminaires from a library supplied by DIALux members, which are lighting manufacturers. The DIALux evo edition is available in 27 languages and is installed on the user's own Windows computer. DIALux Pro is a further version with additional functions, including a link between DIALux and Autodesk Revit.

DIAL GmbH is a German company, and its public material does not name a parent company or shareholders. Registration data is processed under the GDPR, and the privacy statement says that transfers to third countries take place only when the GDPR requirements are met. The statement also notes that from DIALux evo 13.2 onward, the Microsoft Defender SmartScreen component may transfer data to countries outside the EU and EEA, in particular the USA. For a European organisation, the points to check are the cloud-linked functions and these transfers.

Why digital sovereignty matters with DIALux

DIALux is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

DIALux runs on infrastructure you choose and control yourself. You decide where the data lives, including fully within the EU if you want — this is not a fixed hosting choice made by the vendor.

DIALux is closed source, but you run the software yourself on your own infrastructure. The encryption keys and the runtime therefore stay under your own control, though you cannot audit or modify the source code. Ask about export options and open standards to limit software-level lock-in.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs DIALux together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
