Discourse is a community platform for discussion forums. It offers discussion topics, built-in real-time chat, themes and plug-ins, including AI plug-ins and a SQL analysis tool (Data Explorer). Organisations use it for public or private communities. You can install Discourse on your own infrastructure or use the company's managed hosting, and switch between the two later.
Discourse is developed by Civilized Discourse Construction Kit, Inc. (CDCK); under its terms, California law applies and disputes go to the courts in San Francisco. The source code is on GitHub under the GPL version 2. If you self-host, the data stays on your own infrastructure. For managed hosting, CDCK's privacy page says most forums are stored in CDCK data centres and in Amazon S3 in the United States, while some forums are in Canada and the EU. CDCK publishes a data processing addendum that incorporates standard contractual clauses.
