DNS4EU is a free public DNS resolver with protective filtering: it blocks malware, phishing and ransomware at the DNS layer. It is intended for citizens and organisations in Europe and launched in June 2025. The project was co-funded by the European Union from 2023 to 2025 and developed by a European consortium; delivery is led by Whalebone, a cybersecurity company from Brno. Alongside the public resolver there is DNS4GOV, a variant for governments and critical infrastructure. You use the resolver by changing the DNS addresses in your device or router settings.
Whalebone, s.r.o. is based in the Czech Republic, within the EU. According to the website, the service is built and hosted in Europe, on EU infrastructure and under EU rules; specific locations are not named. The operator says it follows privacy by default and that queries are not sold or used for profiling. The sources do not state that the software is open source. For European organisations, DNS4EU is a resolver under European law with no non-European parent company.
