FDN (French Data Network) is a French non-profit internet service provider, active since 1992, that offers two open recursive DNS resolvers to anyone: ns0.fdn.fr and ns1.fdn.fr. According to FDN, the aim is to counter censorship on the internet. The resolvers are reachable over IPv4 and IPv6 and validate DNSSEC. Encrypted access is available through DNS over TLS (port 853) and DNS over HTTPS (https://ns0.fdn.fr/dns-query and https://ns1.fdn.fr/dns-query); according to a French networking blog, DoT and DoH have been available since April 2023. You set the address on a router, a device or a local resolver; no account is needed.
The provider is a French association and therefore subject to French and European law; there is no non-European parent company. The service is free and non-commercial, and the software is not published as open source. The service page says nothing about logging or the location of the servers, so nothing can be stated about either here. A March 2025 notice reports that FDN has strengthened the protections on these servers.
