DuckDuckGo is a privacy-focused search engine from the company of the same name, founded in 2008. Besides search it offers its own browser for Android, iOS, macOS and Windows, browser extensions, the optional AI chat service Duck.ai, and Email Protection, whose @duck.com addresses forward mail after stripping trackers. The company says it does not collect personal data to profile users. Results come from several sources: its own crawler, DuckDuckBot, and, for regular links and images, mostly Bing. Requests to partners are routed through DuckDuckGo's servers, so partners do not see IP addresses. The service is delivered as a website and apps.
DuckDuckGo is a US company headquartered in Paoli, Pennsylvania, owned by Duck Duck Go, Inc. It earns money mainly from search-keyword advertising served through the Yahoo-Bing ad network and, since 2024, from subscriptions. The sources consulted do not state where its servers are located. The software is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. For European organisations, a US provider is subject to US law, and part of the results comes from US partners.
