edX is an online learning platform with courses, certificates and microcredentials, including MicroBachelors and MicroMasters programmes, offered with partner institutions. According to its own site it was founded in 2012 by Harvard and MIT professors. Learners take courses through the website and apps; the service is delivered as SaaS by edX LLC.
edX LLC describes itself as a 2U company and is based in the United States; the privacy policy gives Lanham, Maryland as its contact address. The policy states that data is stored on its own servers and on those of companies it hires in the US and other countries, including the EEA and the United Kingdom. For transfers, edX relies on adequacy decisions, standard contractual clauses or service providers' binding corporate rules, and it has representatives in Ireland and the UK. A European organisation or learner should expect personal data to be processed by a company subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act.
