Elmer is an open-source finite element software package for multiphysics simulation, covering fluid dynamics, structural mechanics, electromagnetics, heat transfer and acoustics. Its code is free under the GPL and LGPL licences, so organisations can install and modify it. It runs from laptops to supercomputers and supports parallel computing.
Elmer is mainly developed by CSC - IT Center for Science, a non-profit Finnish company owned by the Finnish government and higher education institutions. It has no foreign owner, and other organisations and developers also contribute to the project. Because it can run on the user's own infrastructure, it is a self-hosted option with no vendor cloud requirement, although CSC also offers it on its Finnish supercomputing platforms. Customer-specific tailoring of the code is available as a paid service from CSC.
