FreePBX: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

FreePBX is an open-source web interface for managing Asterisk, the open-source telephony framework. It lets administrators set up extensions, trunks and call routing from a browser instead of editing configuration files. FreePBX is released under the GPL-3.0 licence and its code is published on GitHub. It is installed on the organisation's own server, so the telephony system runs wherever the customer chooses to host it.

FreePBX is maintained by Sangoma, which describes itself as the primary developer and sponsor of both the Asterisk and FreePBX projects. Sangoma is headquartered in Markham, Ontario, Canada, outside the EU. For a European organisation the sovereignty question therefore depends mainly on who operates the server. A self-hosted installation keeps call data under the organisation's own control, whereas a hosted service run by Sangoma would need its own assessment of data location and processing terms. FreePBX is a registered trademark of Sangoma.

Why digital sovereignty matters with FreePBX

FreePBX is headquartered in CA, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

FreePBX hosts data outside the EU (OTHER). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

FreePBX is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs FreePBX together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
