Galène is a videoconferencing system with a web client and a server. It is designed to be light on resources and easy to host and administer; it was originally built for lectures and tutorials but also works for ordinary meetings. The server offers multiple audio and video streams, text chat, recording, simulcast, a built-in TURN server and an admin API. The client supports screen sharing, group moderation and peer-to-peer file transfer.
The developer is affiliated with IRIF at Université Paris Cité in France; the project was previously supported by Nexedi and is currently supported through NLnet. The licence is MIT. You run Galène on your own server, for example by building the Go binary or through Yunohost, so data stays with you. The project states that it does not use end-to-end encryption, so the server operator could in principle access the data. Galène is listed in the SILL, the French government's list of recommended free software.
