Google Search is Google's web search engine. It searches an index of web pages and files such as PDFs and Word documents, and ranks results using signals that include PageRank and many others. Alongside classic results, Google offers AI features such as AI Overviews and AI Mode, as well as visual search through Lens and Circle to Search on Android. The service is accessible through the browser and apps.
Google is headquartered in Mountain View, California, and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Alphabet Inc.; the service is not open source. As a US company, Google falls under US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. Signed-in users can have search history and location data saved to their Google Account, with configurable retention periods, and location can be inferred from the IP address, among other sources. The sources consulted do not document in which region search data is processed. For a European organisation, using Google Search means queries reach a US provider.
