Information System Designer: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Information System Designer is an open-source workbench that lets analysts, designers and developers describe the applications of an information system visually. Dedicated graphical editors cover requirements, usage scenarios, databases, data entities, services and user-interface interactions. Existing databases can be reverse-modelled with Liquibase, as can service interfaces defined in OpenAPI, and the models can drive code generation with Acceleo. The workbench is a packaged set of Eclipse plug-ins and runs as desktop software.

The software is published by Obeo SAS in Carquefou (France), which lists the product on its website and offers paid services around it. The code is on GitHub under the Eclipse Public License 2.0. The editors are built with Eclipse Sirius and are extensible. Because the workbench runs locally, your models stay on your own computer or in your own code repository; no vendor cloud is needed. The site also quotes its use on projects at a French ministry.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Information System Designer

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Information System Designer scores best on data residency.

Information System Designer is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.
