IPVanish: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

IPVanish is a commercial consumer VPN service that encrypts internet traffic between a device and a VPN server. It offers apps for Windows, macOS, Android, iOS and Fire TV, supports protocols such as WireGuard and OpenVPN, and includes split tunnelling and features that block known malicious sites, ads and trackers. It is delivered as a subscription service with servers in many countries.

IPVanish is based in the United States (New York) and has been part of Ziff Davis, formerly J2 Global, since 2019. As a US provider it is subject to US law, including the CLOUD Act. According to the company, it follows a no-log policy, which Schellman independently reviewed in 2025; account details such as email address and payment information are retained. IPVanish is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. For a European organisation, using it means relying on the commitments and audits of a non-European provider.

Why digital sovereignty matters with IPVanish

IPVanish is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

IPVanish hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

IPVanish is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs IPVanish together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
