NordVPN is a consumer VPN service that encrypts internet traffic and routes it through the provider's servers. It offers apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Android TV and tvOS, plus browser proxy extensions. Protocols include OpenVPN, IKEv2/IPsec and NordLynx, a proprietary protocol based on WireGuard. Further features include Meshnet, which links personal devices in a private network. NordVPN is delivered as a subscription, and its sister product NordLayer addresses business customers.
NordVPN is developed by Nord Security, formerly Nordsec Ltd, which has offices in Lithuania, the United Kingdom, Panama and the Netherlands. Public sources differ on the legal entity: some describe the service as Lithuanian, others as incorporated in Panama. Nord Security merged with Surfshark under one holding company in 2022. The Linux client is published under GPLv3, while the other clients are proprietary. Independent firms such as Deloitte have audited its no-logs policy. A European organisation should check which legal entity it contracts with.
