Cryptostorm: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Cryptostorm is a VPN service that works without user accounts. You buy a random token; the server stores only a salted SHA-256 hash of it, and the token serves as the credential. A lost token cannot be recovered. The service uses the standard OpenVPN and WireGuard protocols with configuration files, so no proprietary app is required, and it offers multi-hop. It is aimed at users who want to link their identity to a VPN provider as little as possible. According to the provider, its VPN servers do not store data that could identify customers.

According to a review site, Cryptostorm is registered in Iceland, which belongs to the EEA but not to the EU. Servers are rented from third-party hosting providers such as M247, Leaseweb, Scaleway and iomart, in dozens of cities on several continents, including outside the EU. No independent audit of the logging policy is known; the claims rest on the published design.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Cryptostorm

Cryptostorm is headquartered in IS, which falls under the GDPR through the European Economic Area. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in CA. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Cryptostorm scores best on data residency.

Cryptostorm is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Cryptostorm together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
