Jest: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Jest is a JavaScript testing framework with a focus on simplicity. It works with projects using Babel, TypeScript, Node, React, Angular and Vue, and offers zero-config setup, snapshot testing, parallel test execution, built-in code coverage and easy mocking. Jest is open-source software under the MIT licence and runs locally or in your own CI environment; no vendor cloud service is needed.

Jest originated at Facebook (now Meta). In May 2022 Meta transferred the project to the OpenJS Foundation, which provides its organisational home, while the Jest Core team manages it. The foundation is based in the United States, and the project has since been designated an at-large project of the foundation. Because the source code is public and tests run on your own infrastructure, there is no dependence on a particular cloud provider. A European organisation can run Jest itself and inspect the code.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Jest

Jest is headquartered in the United States. US vendors fall under the CLOUD Act and FISA 702: US authorities can compel access to data, even when that data sits in a European data centre. That is the core of the jurisdictional exposure in our model.

Jest hosts data outside the EU (US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Jest is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Jest together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
