Kamailio is an open-source SIP server for voice, video and messaging infrastructure. It acts as a SIP registrar, proxy or redirect server and is used for tasks such as load balancing, least-cost routing, session border control, presence and instant messaging, and as a gateway between SIP and WebRTC. Kamailio is software that operators install and run themselves, from small installations to carrier-scale platforms.
Kamailio is released under the GPL version 2 or later and is developed by a community project rather than a single company. It descends from the SIP Express Router, which was started at the Fraunhofer FOKUS institute in Berlin. Because you host it yourself, call signalling and data stay wherever you deploy it, and no vendor can restrict access to the code. A European organisation can therefore build telephony platforms on infrastructure in jurisdictions of its choice, at the cost of operating and securing the system itself or buying support from third parties.
