kepler.gl is an open source web application for visually exploring large geolocation datasets. Users load CSV, GeoJSON or GeoArrow files, or point to a data URL, and build interactive maps from them. The tool originated at Uber, is released under the MIT licence and is also used as a JavaScript component in other applications; according to the OpenJS Foundation it has been integrated with Jupyter, VSCode, Tableau and Apache Superset, among others.
In 2022 kepler.gl moved from the Urban Computing Foundation to the OpenJS Foundation, a non-profit based in San Francisco. The public demo at kepler.gl runs on the client side: according to the documentation, data stays in the browser and no data or maps are sent back to its server. Because the code is open, you can host the application yourself or embed it without depending on a vendor cloud service. Base maps require a Mapbox access token or an external map style URL, which sends requests to third-party services.
