Khan Academy is an online learning platform offering lessons, instructional videos and practice exercises, including mathematics, science and other school subjects. Learners, parents and teachers use it through the website and mobile apps, and teachers can follow a class's progress. The platform is provided by Khan Academy, Inc., a US non-profit organisation (501(c)(3)) with a mailing address in Mountain View, California.
According to the Khan Academy Kids privacy policy, the service runs on servers located in the United States, and data from users outside the US is transferred there. The same policy describes the rights of EU residents under the GDPR, such as access, correction and erasure. Because the organisation is American, it is subject to US jurisdiction, including the CLOUD Act. The platform is not open source and cannot be self-hosted. European schools that use it should take into account the transfer of pupil data to the US, particularly for minors.
