LangChain is an open-source framework for building agents and applications based on large language models. Developers use it to connect models from many providers to tools, data sources and application logic. It belongs to an ecosystem from the same company that includes LangGraph for low-level agent control and LangSmith, a commercial platform for observability, evaluation and deployment. The framework is a code library that runs inside the developer's own application, so no vendor cloud is needed.
LangChain is maintained by LangChain, Inc., which according to its privacy policy is headquartered in the United States, so it falls under US jurisdiction. The framework is released under the MIT licence and can be run on infrastructure the user controls. The hosted LangSmith service is separate: LangChain states that it processes personal information in the United States, and its privacy policy mentions no EU data region. A European organisation can self-host the framework and keep data in the EU, provided model providers and connected services are also chosen with data location in mind.
