LanguageTool: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

LanguageTool is an AI writing assistant that checks grammar, spelling, punctuation, casing and style, and can rephrase sentences with an AI feature. It supports more than 30 languages and is available as a browser extension, as an add-in for Google Docs, Word and LibreOffice, as an email add-on, as a desktop app and as a proofreading API. A free and a paid version exist.

LanguageTool began in 2003 in Potsdam as an open-source project. The core software is still available under the LGPL 2.1 or later and can be run as your own server; the commercial service itself is not offered as open source. The product is owned by Learneo, Inc. of California, which its privacy notice names as data controller; LanguageTooler GmbH in Hamburg handles part of the processing. Its data processing agreement lists hosting by Telekom Germany and Hetzner (Germany), Google Cloud (Dublin) and AWS (Munich, for texts in the editor and desktop app), and OpenAI and Aleph Alpha for rephrasing. A US parent company is relevant when assessing jurisdiction.

Why digital sovereignty matters with LanguageTool

LanguageTool is headquartered in DE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so LanguageTool scores best on data residency.

LanguageTool is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs LanguageTool together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
