MateCat: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

MateCat is a web-based computer-assisted translation (CAT) tool for professional translators, language service providers and enterprises. It describes itself as an AI-driven tool for the language industry and is used for post-editing and for outsourcing translation work. The tool is developed by Translated, an Italian language services company, and the project began as EU-funded research. The source code is published on GitHub under the LGPL-3.0 licence, with installation instructions and Docker build files for organisations that want to run their own instance. A hosted version is available at matecat.com.

Translated was founded in 1999 and has been a partner of the private-equity firm Ardian since 2021, according to its own site. Because the code is open source, European organisations can self-host MateCat and keep full control over data location. The public pages do not state where the hosted service stores data, so this should be confirmed with Translated before sensitive content is uploaded.

Why digital sovereignty matters with MateCat

MateCat is headquartered in IT and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so MateCat scores best on data residency.

MateCat is open source. You can audit the source code, self-host the software and keep the encryption keys under your own control. Switching is easier because data and software are not tied to a single party.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs MateCat together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
