Messente: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Messente is an Estonian provider of messaging APIs for businesses. A single API sends SMS, Viber and WhatsApp messages, and the website also lists RCS as a channel. Messente also offers Verigator for one-time passcode (OTP) verification, a Number Lookup service that validates phone numbers, and add-on APIs for pricing, statistics and a phonebook. Typical uses are notifications, authentication and marketing. The service is consumed as a cloud platform through the API or ready-made connectors and is paid for with prepaid credits.

Messente Communications OÜ is based in Estonia, with a legal address in Tallinn and an office in Tartu. According to its data handling policy, its servers run in secure data centres in Germany. The privacy policy does state that information from electronic communications may also be processed outside the European Economic Area, for example via carriers and subprocessors. The software is not open source and there is no self-hosting option. For a European organisation, it is worth checking the subprocessor list and the processing locations of the routes it uses.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Messente

Messente is headquartered in EE and therefore falls under European law: the GDPR, NIS2 and the Data Act. No foreign legislation can compel access to your data.

Data is hosted exclusively in the EU, so Messente scores best on data residency.

Messente is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Messente together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
