Llama is a family of language models from Meta whose model weights are publicly available. It includes text models in several sizes as well as models that also process images. Organisations download the weights, for example through the llama-models repository on GitHub, and run them on their own infrastructure or have a hosting provider serve them. Typical uses are chat assistants, summarisation, document search and in-house applications built on a language model.
Meta Platforms, Inc. is a US company. For licensees in the EEA or Switzerland the licensor is Meta Platforms Ireland Limited, and the agreement is governed by California law. The models are released under the Llama Community License, which includes an acceptable use policy, naming and attribution rules and a separate licence request for very large providers. The Open Source Initiative does not regard earlier Llama licences as open source. Organisations that host the weights themselves keep their data inside their own environment; for a European organisation the licence terms still deserve legal review.
