Miðeind is an Icelandic language technology and artificial intelligence company based in Reykjavík. It develops tools for the Icelandic language: spelling and style checking, speech-to-text, translation, a dictionary search and text extraction from PDFs and images. Several of these services are bundled into a platform called Málstaður. The offering is aimed at organisations and individuals who work with Icelandic-language text, and the company publishes much of its code on GitHub.
Miðeind ehf. is established in Iceland, a member of the EEA. As an EEA company it is subject to the GDPR, which also applies in Iceland through the EEA Agreement. The sources reviewed name no owner or parent company and do not state where the services are hosted. The company says most of its software is open source, but its repositories carry different licences, including MIT and GPL-3.0, so openness should be checked product by product. For European organisations working with Icelandic-language data this is a European option, although hosting location and processors should be confirmed in writing.
