nanoCAD: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

nanoCAD is a 2D/3D CAD platform built around the DWG format. It offers drafting and 3D tools, dimensioning, blocks and external references, sheet sets, and IFC, BCF and point-cloud support. Add-on modules cover 3D solid modelling, mechanical design, construction documentation and terrain modelling, and an open API supports add-ons in .NET, Python, LISP and C++. nanoCAD Free provides 2D drafting without a time limit; commercial licences are annual or three-year subscriptions. The software is installed on the user's own computers.

nanoCAD was created in 2008 by Nanosoft in Moscow, Russia, and a Russian company of that name still develops the platform for the Russian market. The international version is offered by Nanosoft AS, a separate Norwegian limited company founded in July 2022 and based in Lillestrøm. The Norwegian register shows no group membership and does not disclose its shareholders. Public sources do not explain how it relates to the Russian company or who owns it. Organisations that need certainty about ownership should ask the vendor.

Why digital sovereignty matters with nanoCAD

nanoCAD is headquartered in RU, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor.

nanoCAD hosts data in EU, OTHER. Exactly what stays within the EU — and what does not — is defined by the vendor's data processing agreement and sub-processor list, not by a setting you control yourself; check those documents for the precise scope, including backups, logs and support access.

nanoCAD is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs nanoCAD together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
