Nearmap: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Nearmap is an aerial imagery and analytics company. It captures high-resolution aerial photographs with its own camera system and analyses them with AI to produce property and infrastructure data. Its products, including MapBrowser, Betterview, itel NOW and AI Insights, serve insurers, architecture, engineering and construction firms and government bodies. Customers access the results through web applications, integrations and APIs, so the service is delivered as a hosted subscription rather than as installed software.

Nearmap Australia Pty Ltd is established in Australia, but the group has been owned since December 2022 by the US private equity firm Thoma Bravo. The United States is therefore the relevant foreign ownership jurisdiction. US-owned companies remain subject to US legal requests such as those under the CLOUD Act, wherever the data is stored. The privacy policy states that data is stored in Sydney, Australia and Virginia, United States, and does not name the hosting provider. A European organisation should therefore confirm in the contract where its data is stored and which group entities can access it.

Why digital sovereignty matters with Nearmap

Nearmap is headquartered in AU, outside the EU. Contracts and data therefore also fall under non-European law. The GDPR applies through contractual terms, but in a conflict with local legislation you have less certainty than with a European vendor. The ultimate owner is based in US. Foreign control undermines part of the certainty a European headquarters offers.

Nearmap hosts data outside the EU (OTHER, US). Personal data therefore leaves the EU, which requires a transfer mechanism under the GDPR and pulls the data residency score down.

Nearmap is closed source and hosted by the vendor. The encryption keys and the runtime sit with the vendor and switching requires data migration. Ask about bring-your-own-key, export options and open standards.

What this means for your organisation depends on your whole stack and context. The free assessment weighs Nearmap together with your other vendors and gives a total score, a heatmap and the main risk drivers.
