Nextcloud Talk: sovereignty score and 8 European alternatives

Nextcloud Talk is the communication app of Nextcloud, offering chat, video and voice calls and webinars within the same platform as files, calendar and contacts. It supports calls with links for external participants, screen sharing, file sharing in chat, federation with other Nextcloud servers, and bridging to networks such as Slack, Teams, IRC and Matrix. Optional AI features provide transcription and summaries. Talk runs as an app on a Nextcloud server and is available on the web, Android, iOS and desktop. An optional High Performance Backend supports larger calls, and a TURN server is needed behind strict firewalls.

Nextcloud Talk is developed by Nextcloud GmbH, a German company with offices in Berlin and Stuttgart. The source code is licensed under the AGPL-3.0. Organisations can self-host Talk, including on-premises or in an air-gapped environment, or obtain it from a local hosting partner. This lets the organisation decide where conversation data is stored and who can access it. The encryption features the vendor describes are vendor claims and depend on the configuration.
