Onshape is a cloud-native product development platform that combines 3D CAD, product data management (PDM) and real-time collaboration. It covers parts, assemblies, drawings, sheet metal and surfacing, plus release management, branching and merging, and bills of materials. Related tools include CAM, simulation, rendering and an AI Advisor, and it connects to PLM systems such as Arena and Windchill. It is delivered as software as a service: users work in a web browser or in iOS and Android apps, with no installation, and the vendor rolls out updates.
Onshape was founded in 2012 in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and PTC, a US company, acquired it in 2019. The platform runs on Amazon Web Services. The pages consulted do not list specific AWS regions or an EU data-residency option; Onshape Government is a separate offering built on AWS GovCloud. Onshape reports an annual SOC 2 Type 2 audit, with the report available under NDA. US law, including the CLOUD Act, can apply to data held by US providers, so ask in writing where design data is stored and which sub-processors are used.
